Product Details

TotalProtect universal high-build epoxy primer & barrier coat prevents & repairs gelcoat blistering. It eliminates water absorption & migration, the major cause of fiberglass hull blisters.

TotalProtect is also an excellent anticorrosive primer for underwater metals such as aluminum, steel, lead, cast iron, stainless & bronze & is compatible with all antifouling paints. Two-part 3:1 ratio system is easy to mix, dries fast & needs no sanding. Use above/below waterline.

Choose Quart or Gallon size in White or Gray.

Bonus: Each Gallon kit includes a roller frame & 3/16 in. nap solvent-safe cover, metal tray, stir stick, paint suit, roll of 1 in. painter's tape & 2 in. chip brush.

For best results, thin with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 & use a 3/16 in. nap or foam solvent-safe roller cover.

Application Notes:

THINNING: TotalBoat TotalProtect is a very thick coating that typically needs to be thinned, for best results. TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 is the required thinner for TotalProtect. Do not use any other thinner to reduce.

REQUIRED ROLLER: TotalProtect can be applied by brushing, rolling or spraying. For best results when rolling, use a 3/16" nap or foam solvent-safe roller cover.

Do not apply TotalProtect over 1-part paints.

  • Gallon Size Kit Includes 3/4 gallon base component & 1 quart of activator. Note: Base container will not be completely filled so you can pour the activator into it and mix.

  • Coverage: 225 sq. ft. (at 7 mils wet, not accounting for waste)
  • Application Method: Brush, Roll (3/16" - 3/8'' nap or foam solvent-safe roller cover), or Spray (airless, conventional, or HVLP)
  • Recommended Number of Coats: See Tech Data. It's more important to ensure 8-12 mils dry film thickness than focus on a certain number of coats. Based on application thickness, more than 3 c
  • Recoat Time (TP over TP): 3-48 hours @ 75°F
  • Overcoat Time (Antifoulant over TP): 5-7 hours @ 75°F
  • Note: Sand with 80 grit and recoat if you miss these windows
  • Induction Period: Allow a 15-minute induction period before reduction and application
  • Thinning/reducing: Reduce up to 10% with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200

It was pretty awesome

We needed to barrier coat and bottom paint our forty-year-old 36-foot trawler in one day and we chose this and the Underdog ablative. It's gotten very hot where we are in southwest FL, so we knew it was going to be a race once we got started. At dawn we were wiping and taping and about an hour and a half later, I boxed the two gallons of ablative and then mixed the first gallon of barrier coat. Let it sit twenty minutes, thinned it 10%, and started applying as soon as the thinner was mixed well. Ultimately, we started at the starboard bow and worked our way back, then up the port side to the port bow and then around again. We ran out of barrier coat about 2/3 of the way up the port side during the first coat, so we mixed another batch and continued around for two full coats - admittedly a little thinner on the second one. The weather cooperated and the timing was perfect as we started the second coat the first was thumbprint tacky. As luck would have it, the second coat was also thumbprint tacky once we got back around to the port bow and we were able to immediately start the ablative application. I did NOT thin the ablative and it went on much thicker - but also easier. With two of us working - one cutting and one rolling, switching out roles several times, we were able to do the entire bottom in about three hours. If I were to do it again, I would recruit another person (or two) to add the ability to either do both sides at once or to swap in and out so we could rest/eat as we didn't finish until after 4 PM. But I was impressed with the fact that this barrier coat did in fact have a very long pot life even in the 97 degree heat that day and it was applying at the same thickness it was when we started all the way through.

Great barrier paint. Dries very hard which I am glad of, but I did not achieve as fine a finish as I wanted using to the mohair hair blend roller that came with the kit. I had to do a lot of sanding before my second coat and make my second coat using a 3/16 mohair roller achieving a much improved finish.
